Commander R. P. Mack, MVO
Preface
The late Commander R. P. Mack, Mvo was known
throughout the numismatic world as the author of “The
Coinage of Ancient Britain’ which was first published in
1953 and has been reprinted twice since that date. Ancient
British coins were indeed his greatest interest, and his
collection of no less than 306 coins forms the most complete
private collection of this series in existence.
His numismatic interest, however, was by no means confined
to the coins of Ancient Britain, and his collection of Anglo
Saxon and Norman coins is again one of the most complete
in the world. He was especially keen on the Baronial coins of
the Norman period which still pose so many problems of
identification. Although not a specialist collector of Mints,
he was always keen to add to his coins of Winchester which
was close to where he lived, and many other Mints are well
represented. The series of William I pennies of type VIII
are particularly well represented by over 50 different Mints.
In 1973 the British Academy published the entire collection
of Ancient British, Anglo-Saxon and Norman coins in
Volume 20 of their series of sylloges of important collections.
The collection had its beginnings as far back as 1908 when
Commander Mack was a small boy of seven. He was given a
little bag of Roman coins. His mother, who was a collector of
china, glass and other antiques, encouraged him and the
collection was really started with the purchase in Winchester
of two English silver pennies for a shilling each. During his
Naval service and up until the War, the collection was more
or less a general one, including both hammered and milled
English gold and silver coins. After the War, however,
Commander Mack decided to concentrate entirely on
Ancient British, Anglo-Saxon and Norman coins, and the
rest of his collection was sold. Collections such as Grantley,
Ryan, ‘Tatts and Parsons came on the market, and many ;
coins from these collections were added. When the Lockett
collection was dispersed, the opportunity to add many
rarieties occurred and another important source was the
collection formed by the Duke of Argyll. Pedigrees and find
spots were of particular interest to Commander Mack and
very careful records of these were kept as will be seen from
the catalogue.
After retiring from the Navy at the end of the War,
Commander Mack had time to spend with his coins and no
one could have had more enjoyment from studying his
collection and meeting the many other collectors he came to
know through membership of the Royal and British
Numismatic Societies. Although he also inherited from his
mother an interest in English china, coins was always his
first love and he was encouraged tremendously in his hobby
by his wife, Marjorie, to whom his book on Ancient British
coins was dedicated. Commander Mack was a person of
infinite charm and kindness, and I remember with affection
my visits to his home in Droxford and the innumerable
occasions when he came to Spinks in London.
In 1966 the collection in its entirety was handed over to
Commander Mack’s son and daughter, Richard Mack and
Mrs D. P. Rowatt, and the owners have now given
instructions for the sale. The coins will be sold by auction in
several parts. This catalogue contains the first selection and
a cross section of all the coins has been included.
There are so many rarities in the sale that it would be
superfluous to select individual coins for mention. Every
coin, however, is illustrated and collectors will be able to see
for themselves the wide range of material being offered for
sale.

Sir John Evans, d 1908
Collection of Ancient British coins presented to the British
Museum by Sir Arthur Evans, 1919. The remainder of the
English series from the introduction of the penny were
prepared for sale and plates actually printed. The collection
was then bought en bloc by J. Pierpont Morgan and
subsequently resold. The British Museum had first
selection and acquired many great rarities. The remainder
dispersed, many of them passing to the late R. C. Lockett.
Plates for the projected catalogue were stored in the British
Museum. A very few were released but the bulk was
destroyed in the coin room fire during the Second World

SALE CATALOGUES
On the average we issue twelve or more Coin Catalogues and three Naval
& Military Medal Catalogues each year, some of which are usually of
Sales of important Collections.
Catalogue Subscriptions
Sale Catalogues, frequently illustrated, are normally posted to Sub-
scribers about three weeks prior to the date of Sale.
List of ‘Prices Realised’ are issued after each Sale, thus giving at a
glance a reliable guide to value. The final test of value must always be
auction prices rather than the figures given in books of reference, for
changing times and fashions soon render the latter obsolete and mis-
leading. The Lists of ‘Prices Realised’ will probably be enclosed in a
following Sale Catalogue.
Subscription Rates
(commencing from Ist January)
Coin Catalogues and subsequent list
of Prices Realised £3.00 per annum
Naval & Military Medal Catalogues and
subsequent list of Prices Realised £0.75 per annum
(Reductions for new subscribers commencing after 1st April.)
All subscriptions expire on 31st December, and renewal reminders are
issued. Catalogues of past Sales cannot be supplied.
Air Mail
To allow subscribers resident outside Europe time to submit postal bids,
Pre-Sale Catalogues will, if desired, be sent by Air Mail. Air Mail
postage is not, however, included in the Subscription Rate and the cost
must be borne by the Subscriber. In such cases an additional {£2.00
should be sent as a deposit and we will advise when this is exhausted.
